La Virgensota
Antioquia, Colombia
Variety: Colombia, Caturra
Processing: Washed
Origin: Antioquia, Colombia
Producers: Jaime Ariza
Altitude: 1850-2100m
Cup Score (Importer): 87
Farm Size: 34 Hectares
This lot of coffee comes from Jaime Ariza's La Virgen farm - though its production and drying process is managed by Juan Saldarriaga at his La Claudina farm. Juan has a lot of specialty capabilities for processing and drying, and it's great that he's spreading those resources around to other small farmers that want to take their coffee's flavors to new heights! This small lot from Mr. Ariza's farm is washed and dried under parabolic beds at La Claudina which produces an even moisture content and a smooth, clear flavor that we're in love with.
We're picking up on some rich, deep notes in this lot - starting off with a juicy plum note that's sweet and not too tart - accompanied by a warm brown sugar flavor that gives the cup a hint of spice. Overall though, it's a coffee that's extra smooth and rich - a bean that will really reward some tinkering with deep, full-bodied flavors. Antioquia has so many unique flavors to offer - and we hope you enjoy this one this week!

The flavor is amazing. The brown sugar layers on top of the boldness of the flavor. Not overpowering but enough flavor that the notes are distinct. I usually like Dark Roasts more so but this gave a run for the money.

This is a good bean for those who prefer darker flavors, as you can extract a nice big body without making bitter coffee. I taste the plum as extremely forward and feel that the sugar and sweetness are slightly overstated in the description. My preference is for coffees that are either a bit sweeter, a bit more acidic, or a bit more complex, but this is a solid, smooth bag.

This coffee is pleasant. It has a bit of an after taste tang to it but very light. To me it is more mellow than rich.

Much better than my first "bright and fruity" experience, this one was a medium strength. As with the previous shipment, a refreshing lack of bitterness, but not the dark roast I crave. It does have the touch of sweet richness described, which is fine for one cup, but not what I want in my morning routine. Would be a good desert coffee.

Another outstanding cup of coffee from Moustache. The plumy, juiciness of the coffee hits you first, followed by a rich and sweet bottom, very balanced and smooth. The last two coffees I've received have both been superb light roasts.

This recent shipment was the best so far. I mean all the coffees have been excellent but the La Virgensota was unique and so smooth. I’m going through it too quickly!

La Virgensota is intriguing, it tastes like a blend of dark and light roasts. As a result, you get the full, rich, roasty goodness of a classic roast, combined with the sweetness and hint of acid of a lighter roast. More difficult to discern some of the subtleties of the coffee due to the dark roastiness predominating, but this is an intriguing coffee nonetheless. Great everyday cup that doesn't demand too much from you, nice and smooth, rich and deep without being bitter.

One of my favorite parts of the delivery is when I first open the bag and smell the fresh beans. Right away the fragrance when you open this bag is luxurious, a nice rich sweet coffee smell. The taste is everything the paragraphs above say. Probably the most accurate description I have read of one of their coffees. Rich sweetness and a hint of berry without being tart or bitter (must be what they call plum), a smooth cup the whole way through. And again, a to die for scent.
